The availability of Medicare rebates applies to clients who are referred by their GP or psychiatrist. Rebates are available under the Australian government's 'Better Access to Mental Health Care' initiative. This initiative entitles clients to access to up to ten sessions per calendar year, with an added six approved under 'exceptional circumstances'.
Clients are eligible to see a psychologist for up to 10 sessions within a 12-month period. In exceptional circumstances, a further 6 sessions may be issued by your GP. Eligibility is based on the diagnosis given to you by your GP. Progress will be reviewed by your GP after your first six sessions, whereby an additional four sessions can be obtained.
