Surrey Hills Day Care Centre embraces a holistic approach to early childhood learning, where children's rights and best interests are paramount. At the core of our approach to learning and care is the belief that all children ought to feel empowered, secure, nurtured and loved. We believe all children deserve choices, autonomy, consistency and access to education.
Our educators aim to create positive learning environments and guide experiences for each child in conjunction with their family. Educators will observe children and facilitate their learning to provide each child with an individualised portfolio by documenting their learning throughout the year. Children and their families will be encouraged to participate in the ongoing process to promote engaged learning.
At Surrey Hills Day Care Centre our 4 year old Kindergarten program runs Monday to Friday within the long day care setting. Our play based curriculum is significantly influenced by Vygotsky's Socio-cultural Theory. Vygotsky's theories stress the fundamental role of social interaction in the development of cognition (Vygotsky, 1978), as he believed strongly that community plays a central role in the process of "making meaning."
Indoor/Outdoor programs at Surrey Hills Day Care Centre are prepared with a strong emphasis on the fundamentals such as language, literacy, mathematical and science based concepts as well as the creative arts (art, music, and dance), development of life skills (social/emotional and independence skills), problem solving and investigation.
When children play with other children they create social groups, test out ideas, challenge each other's thinking and build new understandings. Play provides a supportive environment where children can ask questions, solve problems and engage in critical thinking. Play can expand children's thinking and enhance their desire to know and to learn.
