In a world that often seems increasingly complex, we teach students to be confident in their own ability. Training at Seido helps strengthen character and solidify family ties. We develop coping skills and a sense of community. Students of Seido Karate exercise strong minds, build healthy bodies, and nurture a happy spirit.
We invite you to learn more about the World Seido Karate Organization, its founder and leadership, and our philosophy that makes Seido Karate so applicable to today's life. Bayside Seido Karate offers classes for children of all levels of experience and ability. Specialized curriculum for students ages 5-8 allows them to progress steadily as they acquire the fundamental skills of balance, strength, and mental focus.

Seido Karate is a traditional Japanese style of karate, into which its founder, Kaicho Tadashi Nakamura has distilled the essence of what he has learned about the martial arts in over 50 years of study, practice, and teaching. We are now a worldwide organization, with thriving branches throughout the United States and in such diverse places as Asia, Australia, Europe, New Zealand, South Africa, and South America.
Since then it has slowly grown and helped all manner of students to achieve their best potential. Kyoshi Darek Lebek is a 5th Dan Black Belt with many years experience in both teaching Seido Karate and Self Defence (he taught Self Defence to the general public and the South African Police Force in South Africa where he lived for 13 years).
The Seido emblem is the five-petaled blossom of the Japanese plum tree, which is also my family's emblem. It is my wish to carry over into Seido many of the things that I learned from my parents. I also wish to stress that all members of the World Seido Karate Organization are members of a family. No matter how good or skillful he or she is.
Seido Karate offers a program of traditional Japanese Karate for adults of all ages and fitness levels. It is not necessary that you have any previous karate experience, or that you are in a particular physical condition. The structure of the beginner classes will allow you to ease into your training slowly and safely at your own level.
The class begins with the standard Seido warm up and stretching exercises (performed at Seido dojo's all around the world because we are a worldwide organisation - we find that this helps put you at ease if you visit and train at another Seido dojo). Teaching karate to children is very different from teaching karate to adults.

Our family has been training at this dojo for many years now and we love it. Unlike many other karate styles, Seido focuses on inclusivity, celebrates diversity, and promotes "spirit before technique, technique before strength". Kyoshi Darek & Senpai Sher-lene embody this approach - they are great leaders and work hard to make everyone feel included and part of the karate family with many regular special events in addition to regular training for all different age groups.

I started training at Bayside Seido Karate because I was looking for a fun way to keep fit and learn some self-defence at the same time. The leaders Kyoshi Darek & Senpai Sher-lene are the most wonderful, kind, respectful people you will even meet and they work very hard to make everyone feel included to the point where the dojo and the people in it become like your second family. There is a big focus always doing your best, respect for yourself and others, strength physically and mentally. As well as regular training they run events during the year including movie nights, games nights, camp, tournaments

I am very grateful to Bayside Seido Karate and the great teachings of Kyoshi Darek, Senpai Sher-lene and every person who I learnt from there. Bayside Seido is an amazing place to practice things that the student would take with them outside the dojo to help in their everyday life. It’s not just about the fancy spinning kicks (which we learn anyway) but more about the true purpose of Karate in my opinion of becoming better people. One way of becoming better is how we handle challengers and overcome them with a strong spirit - which Seido focuses on. It does not matter about your age, your physique

I joined after several years of having a break from martial arts. My kids tried first and so I thought I'd give it a go. I'm still here after 15 years. A good thing is that it is part of a worldwide organisation which means that you will probably find a school in another country. You can train to your own limits and it's a great way to keep fit and learn some self-defence skills. And it's great for kids' development.
