The surgical options for weight loss available to you will depend on your individual circumstances. The right procedure for you will be determined through consultation with your health care professionals. BMI > 35 by itself or >30 if there is already an associated obesity illness, such as diabetes or sleep apnoea.
The sleeve gastrectomy operation involves removing the capacity part of the stomach so that it turns the stomach into a narrow tube or "sleeve". Instead of holding about 1.5 litres of food, the stomach can now only hold a small cupful. We believe that it works by changing the levels of various hunger hormones so that the person no longer feels so hungry between meals and gets a full feeling after eating only a small amount of food.
Orbera is a soft balloon inserted into the stomach with gastroscopy under sedation as a day hospital procedure. The balloon is inflated to 600-700mls to occupy most of the capacity part of the upper stomach, hence it helps with portion control. Combined with close dietetic supervision and exercise, Orbera can help achieve weight loss up to 10-15kg.
Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) or 'Endoscopic sleeve (ES)' is a newer type of non-surgical weight loss procedure. This procedure is performed under general anaesthesia, using a special gastroscope and an innovative suturing device called OverStitch (Apollo Endosurgery). The capacity part of stomach is sutured within the stomach using non-dissolvable sutures, narrowing the stomach into a tube.
A: There is an assessment program to go through first. You need to see a dietician, physician, psychiatrist and usually a respiratory physician to make sure you don't have sleep apnoea. These appointments take 3 to 6 weeks, then after seeing Mr Michell again, your surgery can be arranged. Because the band gives you a smaller stomach pouch, you become full with much less food.

When I had my son in 2019, my weight got to the highest it had ever been. I had always been a thin person, but over the years the weight kept creeping up, until I was post birth 95kgs and considered obese! The turning point was when my doctor did a blood test and found out my liver enzymes were elevated. Upon doing a scan, I found out I had fatty liver! I knew if I didn’t change my ways, my health would deteriorate - and I was only 30 years old.
I had tried every diet underthe sun, and I’d always end up hungry and binging once again. I felt desperate, so I looked at getting a procedure
