Most people usually just go to the club that is closest to their home or work, and don't give anything else much consideration. It takes at least 4.5 years to get a black belt, and each dan grade takes several years of additionl training after that. Our instructors have been training for many years to get where they are to be able to teach you.
It is the successor to Shihan Shah's part-time Newtown Kyokushin Karate club that had been in operation for over 15 years. In late 2009, he decided that it was time to take his karate teaching to a new level, retired from his day job as IT admin at the University of New South Wales, and started looking around for a full time dojo location.
At Kuro Obi Martial Arts our goal is to provide students with the best possible training they can get as martial artists. We do not teach acrobatic moves, with multiple spinning kicks and dramatic flips. While they are very impressive, they have no place in a martial art that is serious about teaching people how to handle themselves in a potentially dangerous situation.
At Kuro Obi Martial Arts, we'll teach you the basics of self defence, and give you the necessary tools to help defend yourself. Nothing we can teach you will make you invincible, or even invulnerable. NO martial art can promise you that and be telling you the truth.
What we can do is help you be prepared for a situation where self-defence becomes necessary, and with enough practice, the techniques we teach MIGHT help you get out of that situation alive and unharmed. There is no telling how an actual situation might affect you though. The adrenalin dump you will get when such a thing happens will either turn you into quivering heap, or allow to you fight as hard as you need to to help out of the situation.

Many people say they don't think they're fit enough to do karate, and they'll come back when they're fit enough. Wrong. This is a popular misconception - even a popular excuse! You do karate to GET fit, not because you are fit. Everyone has to start somewhere. It is commonly said that a black belt is a white belt who never quit.

Wanted to express my sincere appreciation and gratitude for Shihan Shah and this haven of Martial Arts learning in the Inner West. Like others who have also previously commented, I tried several different martial styles and Dojo's before I found the right fit for me too. Once I did my first introductory Kyokushin classes, was convinced I need look no further. Studying Karate has helped me achieve many different personal goals and work on my self discipline and development in many, many ways - have improved my self defense skills, obtained much better mental and physical clarity, lost a bunch of

Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, Value
My son and daughter have been attending karate for several years now. Shihan Shah has been a wonderful teacher. He’s great with kids, they really respect and listen to him. I would highly recommend Shihan Shan and his team to anyone who wants their children to gain confidence, fitness and discipline.

The best place to learn Kyokushin Karate in Sydney. I went to my first class when I was a young boy, back in 2000s, in Russia, and It was kind of a challenge for me to start attending classes with a new trainer, in a foreign country, on my own without any friends or partners. It was 2 years ago, I’m 30 y.o. now, and I’d like to say, that Shihan Shah is one of the best trainers I’ve ever met. If you’re an adult person, if you’ve never been doing martial arts, if you think that it’s “too late” - don’t think, just show up, you won’t regret it.

Fantastic environment for practising martial arts in the Inner West, the instructors are so dedicated and excellent at adjusting their skills to their audience (I'm referring to the kids classes). I was amazed at the ability of the teacher to communicate to young children the importance of all sorts of important values key to the art of Karate and just as essential for becoming a well-rounded individual. Highly recommend the place for all ages!

An excellent dojo to learn martial arts under the expert guidance of Shihan Shah. For me, from the very young to the not so young, Kuro Obi teaches an honest approach to learning all aspects of your karate that is based on real achievements and developments, not just belt colours. I highly recommend Kuro Obi for all ages and experience.
