Services
The first medical service in the Merrylands area was established by Sister Cooney, who opened a private hospital at 15 Chertsey Street (now Memorial Avenue) in 1923. Merrylands was then rural, characterised by market gardens and poultry farms, with only a few shops in the main street. The increasing population made it possible for the community to support a doctor in the area, and in 1926 Dr. H.T. Illingsworth often called Dr.
Practice Nurses - our Practice Nurses, Melinda and Maryanne, are an integral part of our team, providing a range of services for patients. These include wound dressings, INR checks, flu and childhood vaccinations, ECGs, lung function tests, ear syringing, preventative health checks and assisting the doctors with minor procedures.
Acupuncture is a sophisticated system of energy medicine that is over 3000 years old and involves an external stimulus being applied to different energy points on the skin. There are a numberuses for acupuncture. Holroyd Medical Practice is pleased to be able to offer this service to patients. Dr Sanjiv Shah offers acupuncture as a mode of treatment for a variety of muscle and joint conditions.
An ECG is a technique for measuring the electrical activity of the heart. This information can be used to determine if there are problems with the function of the heart - it can tell us if there is a problem with heart rhythm, or if the heart is enlarged, or if there is evidence of blockages affecting the blood supply to the heart (the coronary arteries).
Lung Function Tests are performed to aid in diagnosing certain types of chronic lung diseases, or for assessing their severity. Our practice nurses have been trained in the use of a machine which is used to measure how well you breathe. Whilst you breathe out into a machine that measures air flow rates, your values are compared to standardised tables based on your age, gender and height.
