The "fight or flight" reaction we all get when faced with a threat or some danger is a normal human response. A panic attack is a discrete period of intense apprehension, fear or terror usually associated with a feeling of impending doom. Panic attacks have symptoms of heart palpitations, shortness of breath, choking sensations, sweating and a fear of going crazy or losing control and wanting to escape.
The essential feature of depression is a period of at least 2 weeks during which you have a depressed mood (sad, empty, tearful) most of the day, nearly every day, or you have a loss of interest or pleasure in nearly all activities. In children and adolescents the mood may be irritable or bored rather than sad.

I saw Ian on glowing recommendations, but that's not what I got. He would spend almost all of the session waffling about what was in the news, and then in the last 5 minutes he'd ask a couple of open ended questions about how I was doing. He was obviously not engaged and committed to helping me at all. I even allowed for 6 sessions to see if he had some master plan, but it went nowhere.
The psychologist I went to after him was the complete opposite, she actually cared about me and changed my life.
