A well designed space with views over the the yarra river, friendly staff, and music at a reasonable volume so you can still chat with family and friends. An extensive drinks menu including low alcohol and mocktails too which was a nice addition. Went during the day and it wasn't too noisy or crowded despite being in the middle of Southbank. Tasty shoestring fries.

I lived in Europe and travelled a lot there, this place is somewhat very nice and not too pricy but nothing like typical german. Even tho the menu is, beers are and few meals are quite authentic this is not really alike compared to over there. Beside that, the food was very good and we been recommended beers that suited perfectly with our meals. Ambiance was good and offpeak so pretty quick to get served.

Barteneders were really friendly and helpful when I wanted to try different beers. Good for groups but you might need to wait for a table outside. It's inside a small looking mall looking thing but it overlooks the south bank water and at night the mall is more of a strip of restaurants and bars. Loved it.

Excellent spot overlooking the Yarra River, from the second story. Modern German Bierhouse with plenty of space and large tables, excellent for groups. The food is very nice, with a good selection of German classics. Great number of German beers on tap. Definitely on the pricey side, though not unexpected given the location.

Don't do it. Both our meals were simply disgusting. Rare that I'm so crude but I don't want anyone else going through what we did. It's incredible the manager (if it actually was the manager) expected I should be ok with a LARGE piece of cartilage from the bacon IN my burger. When giving feedback on how taken aback I was to find that in my meal, he thought that correcting me on what I labelled it was a good idea, really? So he checked it when I sent it back, good on you, it doesn't change the fact that it reflects very poor quality kitchen processes. More important, a food

Went to Hophaus on a Tuesday night, and right from the beginning I knew this would be a below-average night. To start, there was no one to tell us to either take a seat or to seat us. The place was maybe a third full, but no waiters or bar people paid any attention to me or my companion. Finally went to the bar and the guy there apologized and said he would get someone for is. Waitress eventually came and seated us, again apologizing saying they had a birthday party going on (as if that were an excuse to ignore anyone else).
And that's pretty much how the night went: ignored. Most of

Having been to Germany with my boyfriend only a couple of months before, we walked past this place along the strip of restaurants in Southbank and couldn't resist a walk down memory lane. We were happy to discover the dunkel weisse bier, my new favourite beer and not too easy to find in regular pubs!
Keeping a promise to myself to order the pork knuckle should I ever see it on the menu, my choice was easy. It was true to its word, the crackling was delicious and crispy and there was so much of it. The meat underneath was tender and fell off the bone, like it had been slow cooked for hours

Avoid after work on Fridays unless you want to be armpit deep in suits, but otherwise I really dig the Hophaus. If you're lucky enough to get a perch on the balcony on a nice day with a stein in your hand then you're probably going to stay a while and work your way through a few of the taps. Yet to eat here but the smells coming from the kitchen were pretty enticing.

A little hard to find which is a downside, but in a good location as it's not in the path of another venue, and the views are nice. It's great to be able to choose from a range of stable tap beers, and some you can't get many places such as fruh kolsch and bitburger. In the bottled beers range there are many commonplace selections such as the weisptehaner and erdinger range. Snacks are good; fries, spatazle, bretzel, pulled pork roll, and the hamburger are the picks. If you're feeling adventurous, there's quite a lot on the dining menu which may be mysterious to you. To

Upstairs at Southbank is quite an unusual place to put a German beer hall. It's separated into two sections - dining and drinking.
Dining is meat, meat, meat, bread. YEAH. Pulled Pork roll with crackling, was pretty damn fine. Delicious tender pork and crispy crackling washed down with a tasting paddle.
If you are overwhelmed for choice, ask the staff for their paddle suggestions. Good times.
Good for a quick drop in or a Friday night drink.

Hopping into Hoptoberfest certainly gave the Hophaus a few challenges. The thing to remember is that the Hophaus offers a modern Australian twist on traditional Bavarian food. An interesting and delicious twist of the bretzel. Which at $9 is the most expensive in Melbourne.
Secondly I will put it out there that we had a booking of 30(ish) and I think 35 turned up for drinks and dinner. Huge round of applause for how the Hophaus staff handled all the lovely lederhosen and dirndls.
We had arranged for our table to set up individual bar tabs (or small groups) and no items to be ordered to the table

Hophaus is a newly opened German beer hall and restaurant in the Southgate centre in Southbank. Excellent selection of German beers---I was able to have a huge stein of Bitburger which made me quite happy on a chilly winter day.
The food is traditional Bavarian which means it's mainly meat and potato focused. Two of the standouts were the Kartoffelpuffer which are delicious potato pancakes with apple sauce (similar to Jewish latkes) and the enormous pork knuckle (how that was classified as a small dish is beyond me).
For the main I shared the Bavarian platter which is a large spread of meats

Checked this out on first night open to find that two-thirds of the patrons where off duty staff members. It may be a quiet start but this place is going to be very popular.
Compared with the local competition at Pony Fish Island and Riverland, Hophaus is well priced ($9 for German pint) and has a great selection of German pub grub.
Located in the location of the old Blue Train restaurant the new fit out is slick and inviting. I could easily see myself here on a Sunday afternoon savouring a few European ales.
You might still be able to smell the paint work but i'm a fan.
