To us Modern Australian means mixing European kitchen technique, mediterranean hospitality, with the types of bold flavours you might expect from Pan-Asian cuisine, all served it in a typically casual aussie, family-dining setting. We are located in a heritage townhouse just off Taylor Square at the axis of Paddington, Darlinghurst and Surry Hills.
The restaurant features comfortable counter-top dining, a garden terrace and an intimate dining room, also available for private hire. We are 3 mates who have all spent most of our working lives working in hospitality all around the globe but have been particularly influenced by restaurant & bars in Melbourne and London.

Services
Our dinner menu consists of small & larger plates designed to easily share. They are roughly ordered from lighter dishes that work well as appetisers, up to larger plates which together with sides would form a substantial main course. We aim to cater for everybody and pride ourselves on being able to cover most dietary requirements, please just let us know when you book or on arrival.
There are no eggs & sides or avo smash, we have plenty of great neighbours in Surry Hills who have that covered! Our last brunch seating is at 3pm, perfect if you have had a very slow start to your weekend! We don't have our own espresso machine but feel free to grab one from next door or enjoy our batch brew filter coffee from Welcome Dose roasters in Rosebery.
We stock exclusively Australasian wines and support smaller producers as much as we can. By sourcing locally we're able to reduce our footprint on the environment in terms of transportation whilst supporting local growers & winemakers. We keep a concise list of the very best of Australasian wines, opening 8 wines daily to serve by the glass.
Larger tables and groups are very welcome at Dead Ringer and we have put together a range of fantastic set menus options. They represent great value as well as taking the hassle out of ordering from small plate and sharing menus in larger groups. We can comfortably look after any dietary requirements and are happy to split bills as many ways as needed.
We take allergies and dietary requirements very seriously and take pride in being able not just merely accommodate, but to serve delicious and substantial meals for all diets. Our menu is naturally about 90% gluten free and with a little notice, we can very well accommodate vegan diets. Firstly got to say the staff were amazing here and they never let a wine glass go empty. We got the FEED ME MENU which was a good taste of everything. The highlights were definitely the scallops and the cape grim sirloin steak

A fabulous experience in both food and service. The service was outstanding and was really role model in how a great restaurant can serve guests and this was on a really, really busy evening, seemingly full house and Surry Hills across the board also seemed to be heaving.. The food was excellent and matched the service. Ambience was great and not too noisy so you could still hold an easy conversation, all patrons having a great time. Clearly very popular and was recommended by a discerning person as well.

Was a nice evening to dine here for Valentine’s Day, and we were taken care of by multiple staff throughout the night. The food was quite nice as well, and delivered us our first decent experience of australian-european fine dining.

What started off as a couple of late Sunday afternoon drinks and some small bites turned into an early dinner! Why? The small bites were delicious, then the mains were amazing, the drinks were satisfying, and the service was friendly.
A great place to have a long lunch or long early dinner! Nice to be seated near the front, we watched the day turn to night. Enjoyable couple of hours on a lazy Sunday.

Four of us came for the set price weekend brunch, and we all really enjoyed it. Sally, our waiter, was incredibly friendly, attentive and personable. The food was good quality and interesting. The focaccia was universally liked, the smoked salmon was really tasty, the zucchini tart was delicious, the chicken in a bed of polenta was juicy and tender, and the desserts were tasty. The wine list is not extensive and is quite expensive. We had a great time

I savored every single bit, it was so well done and perfectly flavored and balanced. Great gf and vegan options without skipping out on flavor or quality. Our waitress was super great and very knowledgeable about the wine list to boot. 10/10 would recommend. I'll definitely be a regular here.

We stopped by deadringer immediately after getting into Sydney for some much needed fresh food. We were not disappointed.
We ordered the salmon, burrata, and something else I can't remember with tomatoes. All were delicious and a good amount of food for 3 people.
The staff was nice and understanding of us being tired/having all our luggage.
Would totally recommend, really cool and hip place to check out.

Came here for Meatless Monday. Nice cozy place, friendly staff, on point with attention. Got the set menu...amazing. Creamed almonds with the perfect beet crunch, beet salad with goat cheese and kale. Chickpea fritters could have been a bit crispier. Cauliflower and gnocchi, and we each got our own pavlova, which is amazing melt in your mouth sweetness like clouds coated in imaginary fortune cookies. So glad we came here.

Beautiful atmosphere. We were seated at the bar which made for an interesting night as we watched all the carefully made cocktails go out and our drinks were never left empty. Wonderful service! They have a 'Feed Me' menu however we opted for our own selection. The food was a little hit and miss in terms of flavour and portion size for dollar value however nothing that would stop be going back again.

We found this place on Yelp, and it was amazing. The food was delicious. We ordered - Chicken Liver Parfait, Scallops, Broccolini and the Brisket for mains.
Their menu was dated, so looks like it changes daily.

Came from out of town with a friend for brunch. Firstly I want to commend your service in confirming the booking, I had chosen outside seating, but as there was a chance it would be a miserable day, I was phoned to confirm if I would like to be inside instead, and if the weather was nice they would move us back outside.
Then the service we received on the day was superb! Friendly, chatty and made to feel welcome!
The set brunch menu was divine! Not your typical brunch food, but so delicious! Topped off with 2 hours of bottomless mimosas, and my friend and I had a fantastic day!

There are few twins in Surry Hills to this dead ringer. I voted for a long lunch and with seven courses in their manifest I was treated to a delicious feast to share with my date and pooch. And both were welcomed (yes, it's very date friendly hehe). Creamed almonds /w dried grapes on toast. Heavenly. Roast chicken /w spinach and onion. Satisfying. Few parties would be as happy after my vote today.

We went here recently for a catch up with friends and we all left looking for a chance to visit again. Right from the start they had us on side when they offered free drinks to help compensate for a late table. Every dish was amazing, with the dishes I expected to love delivering and the dishes I wasn't expecting to love becoming my new found favourites. Try the barrumindi it is out of this world.
