This hotel was designed by architect M Hennessy who was also responsible for the Meagher's Family Hotel in City Road and the Maori Chief Hotel in Moray Street. After a rapid turnover of licensees, Annie Bell took over in 1935 and it remained within the Bell family until 2013; the longest present-day association between any family and hotel in South Melbourne.
Parts of the original hotel remain, including the slate roof, chimneys and double hung sash windows. With negotiations commencing in 2011, Sam Tresise finalised ownership of Bells Hotel in 2013. Since, he has built a venue that has it all. Whether you want to watch some live sport with mates, get away in the Gardens, have celebratory drinks on the rooftop, or simply treat yourself to one of Melbourne's best parma's, Bells has got it all.

Used to come here all the time and loved this place. Went today for the first time since lockdowns have lifted. The dude that served me who seemed like he was running the show almost seemed annoyed at me for ordering. Didn't understand it. Ate my meal and left. The food was decent and came out quick.

Working in the area for five years has meant that despite the fact we are now working from home a lot of my life is now geared around this suburb (hairdresser, acupuncturist, facialist etc) so I continue to spend a bit of time in the area and lucky enough most of my favourite dining haunts are still open.
Naturally I stuck with the parma for lunch today (why mess with a winning formula), you can see several photos of different occasions and it’s consistently huge, so definitely good value for money and incredibly filling

I had no idea that this pub existed until recently, but then again that probably has a lot to do with me working off a rather incomplete (and rather old) list of Australian pubs. I ended up discovering this place through a bit of trial and error. Anyway, I eventually get here and I was suitably impressed. Not being on one of the major roads means that this place is a lot quieter than normal, though there was a function out in the beer garden. Personally, I quite liked it, and would have not problems coming back another time.
