We have been teaching traditional Mysore-style Yoga for over 25 years in our tranquil studio in the heart of Fitzroy, Melbourne. Our unrivalled timetable offers classes almost every day of the year. Whether you are a beginner or experienced, out of shape or athletic, the Ashtanga Vinyasa system of yoga is a powerful method for improving your flexibility, stamina and strength.
Above all, it creates an atmosphere for opening the heart and consciousness, fostering a greater sense of wellbeing. In the early 1990s we returned home from studying with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore South India. We then began teaching the first daily Ashtanga vinyasa classes in Melbourne. After a number of years moving between some great spaces we finally knuckled down to restoring the 450sq metres of our Argyle St studio.

Do you remember a time when you knew that your life would be amazing and that you would live to make a meaningful contribution to life on Earth? And then what happened? This workshop introduces layers of technique to gradually finding and implementing our life's divine purpose. Have you been feeling a little unmotivated to maintain a consistent Yoga practice?
If you have not practiced for some time, they make an ideal refresher. You will receive a thorough introduction to the foundations of Ashtanga Yoga, building strength, flexibility and focus by connecting breath and movement in a sequence of postures (asanas) from the Primary Series. For optimum results, we recommend taking 2 classes per week.
Our Shala is a beautiful and tranquil space. Used several times a day by those practicing yoga, it hums with their energy long after they have gone home. Huge windows spill natural light into the main studio, making it a creative, reflective, energy-filled space. With three studios, a working kitchen and spacious communal areas, our Centre is an ideal venue for a wide variety of classes, workshops and community events.

My favorite studio to practice in Melbourne because of the experienced teachers and their warm nature. It is a welcoming space and one of the more traditional yoga studios. I highly recommend coming here if you want to deepen your practice and learn about all aspects of yoga under the guidance of great teachers.

The following was an email I sent a short while ago to the owners. What I didn’t add was what a great space they have. I live in Alice Springs but attend classes regularly when visiting Melbourne. They’ve got it right with true focus on every aspect of yoga practice. I’ve attended several Shalas in Australia, USA and Bali and this place is just so special. All the instructors and the dedicated students are also a beautiful reflection of this Shala.

I am regularly practicing Mysore at this studio, to my gratefulness and enjoyment. The studio has a warm, friendly and respectful atmosphere. All teachers are wonderful people with many years of teaching experience. Very advanced as well as less advanced people are welcome, and taught on their level aiming to develop their practice. I have been able to develop my practice a lot thanks to them. I can recommend this studio to anyone. Keep up the fantastic work!!!

I've only attended the one class, a led class on a Sunday a few months ago. Fairly good, although I got a few adjustments that were opposite to what I needed/wanted due to injuries. Not specific to this studio, but I find that modern ashtanga studios often lack individual attention (even in Mysore classes). There is a need to stick rigidly to a set sequence, with a set idea of how each asana must look on different bodies, regardless of injury. Some adjustments are painful and harmful, as friends who attend here have told me about. I suspect this is a great place for experienced practitioners, as

I was given a voucher for their introductory yoga class - but at 2hrs per session, 3 days per week it was overwhelming for someone trying yoga for the first time. Considering the cost of the voucher, I was disappointed in the lack of flexibility staff offered if you couldn't make a class.
If you're serious about yoga this is a great place, but for newbies it's not a great introduction

I love this place - it is where my husband and I began our yoga journey over 8 years ago and we were looked after so well. This Shala is the biggest and most beautiful I have ever been to with a settled, contemplative energy. The teachers are all very experienced and knowledgeable with a true passion for helping others develop and learn through their practice. I wish we still lived in Melbourne so we could go there :-). Highly recommended.
