A family-friendly hotel that boasts excellent food, friendly staff and fantastic live music. Established in 1881 as the Woods Family Hotel by Charles Woods, the pubs first licensee, a young English emigrant, son of a publican who had dreams of promise and prosperity.
Unfortunately it was a dream that could not be fulfilled while he was the licensee as the lack of a train station allowing residents access to Hamilton's railway line - the Newcastle to Maitland line (opened in 1857) meant that goods and passengers carried by rail and destined for Hamilton would rattle straight past to Newcastle.The case for a rail stop and platform at Hamilton mounted through the 1860s.

The seafood platter to share $70: Came with prawns in a cream sauce, not really shareable, I guess the prawns were about to expire. A huge piece of fish, not really shareable, again I'm guessing they were using up stock. About 10 chips, c'mon, they cost nothing. Calamari was fine. Oysters with shell fragments in them. Salad was all good.

Seriously awesome we came on a Tuesday night which was Trina night which made a great atmosphere. The meals were super tasty which house made chipotle sauce. The play ground area was fantastic and beer on tap is great. Loads of seating space and staff were more than happy to help you. The prices are also very good value for money.

Food and service was great. Only small thing was, both us and our friends took our kids, aged 4 to7, as it has a good reputation for being child friendly. We were sat in outdoor area at 5pm, and there was a musician playing, at a pretty decent volume. We couldn't hear each other talk which was our only gripe. He was good! But, maybe, hold it back an hour or so to give early diners some loud music free time. Food good, came out quickly also. Great play area for kids. We will be back for sure

Being right next to a railway station is always a good position to have a pub, but when the pub has a good beer garden, and some decent beers on tap then it is even better. Okay, this pub is located in Newcastle, so it is probably not the type of pub that somebody who lives in, say, Melbourne, would go and visit for a night out, but then again you never know. Still, it was a pretty nice pub, and quite a large one as well, with a great beer garden. Oh, and the staff were pretty cool as well.
