Physical vigour, strength and mental exercise are the cornerstones of the yogic tradition. Yoga is both an intellectual system and a practical means to achieve a specific end: harmony of the being. Its theological and philosophical precursors come from the mantras, or hymns, of ancient Hindu writings in India.
The Yogic tradition was passed on from father to son and teacher to pupil. Yoga is a daily practice for those who use it. The yogi (one who follows the practice of yoga) is a practitioner, not a philosopher, theologist or psychologist. Yoga enthusiasts practice what they preach. Iyengar style Yoga deals with the physical body and its control, health and wellbeing.

Classes at Balwyn Yoga Centre are all inclusive. You do not have to provide any mats or equipment to do a class. For new students, the school provides a comprehensive 5 week course to learn the basic skills and moves required for a regular class. This course is provided in a small separate room in the school that allows for more personal assistance from a trained teacher to get you started.

This is hands down the best studio in Melbourne. Inge is an incredibly knowledgeable yoga teacher and her classes are always challenging. There is great variety in the sessions so you are never bored. The leaders on the mats are excellent, also. I’ve been attending classes here for 8 years and I wouldn’t go anywhere else!

This yoga centre is amazing. My sister and I joined as beginners and I've been amazed at how quickly my flexibility, strength and fitness have improved. The staff are all incredibly skilled and I've managed to advance rapidly and gain strength without straining or injuring myself. The atmosphere in the class is super friendly and motivating and after only a few months it feels like I've been going for years. The catch-up system is also a great feature and means if something comes up and you miss a class you can make it up on a Saturday. Going has become a real highlight of my week; each class is

My mum and I had been practicing Iyengar yoga for a while but we wanted to try a studio closer to our home, so we found this on google and decided to give it a try. It was not only the worst yoga experience I’ve ever had, but it was uncomfortable, upsetting and outright unacceptable.
The class started without any warm-up, the sequence of poses was extremely fast and the owner (not the instructor of the class who was merely a demonstrator but was clearly not leading the class) was sitting in a corner shouting poses to us in a fashion similar to a military training system. Plank! Cobra! Crocodile

In 2011, having recently moved into the area, I attended a class at this yoga centre. It was a deeply uncomfortable experience.
The beginner's room was very crowded and so we were asked if there were any volunteers to go into the main room. I volunteered. In the main room, the teacher called out instructions to the class in a way reminiscent of a military training course rather than a yoga class. Plank! Cobra! Plank! It was unpleasant and stressful - not at all what I had experienced at other yoga centres.
During the class, a second person (I believe to be the owner) was shouting across the room

I have been going to this centre for the last 7 years and never regretted my being part of it. My body misses it when I'm not able to do the Iyengar yoga stretches. It's a different yoga, it is a form of Yoga that has an emphasis on detail, precision and alignment in the performance of posture and breath control . It increases my mobility, strength and stability. Perhaps it's not for everyone, but highly recommended for those who thinks Iyengar yoga is for them. Thanks Inga, Larry, Carla, Ingrid and Mark for your patience with us all.
