Ashtanga Yoga Shala
Are you looking for a Yoga School that's personal - where the teacher will know your name; where you will learn an effective, authentic, Yoga practice? Yoga practices remain one of humanity's enduring quests to find meaning and uncover the mystery behind appearances. The practice of yoga is a process of self-discovery and transformation.

Sincere application of Yoga provides the opportunity for personal transformation by gradually dissolving the physical, mental and emotional 'impediments' that restrict our life potential. In a city of Southern India, there was a remarkable Yogi involved in the practice and teaching of a unique, intricate and assiduously applied method of Hatha Yoga for well over 60 years.

This is the most authentic Yoga class in Brisbane. Richard has extensive anatomical knowledge that allows him to adjust postures as necessary to ensure those carrying injuries can still access an asana practise that is of benefit to them (speaking from experience!). More importantly, Richard’s teachings take Yoga to a far deeper level than the physical postures to encompass the philosophical and meditative aspects of Yoga such that Yoga becomes a lifestyle practise that will bring balance to your mind and enrich your life.

I have been practising yoga with Richard since Jan/2020 and I can say that it has positively transformed my life. Like Richard always says, if you let (and have patience), yoga will work on you, and it really does. I will be forever grateful to life for putting Richard and Ashtanga Yoga Shala on my path to become my best self. I will always think of and remember them with respect and gratitude.

My husband and I have been going here for a few months now and we have finally found the practice we have been yearning for for many years. Richard Clark is a profound person- so knowledgeable, humble, professional and Classical. We have been yearning to go to Mysore to study this form of Yoga- not only as a practice but as a lifestyle. With… Richard and the classes at AYS, we have a chance to experience this lifestyle and methodologies directly. We now practice what we learn in classes, everyday. We don't wish to miss a day of abhyasa for that is the level of inspiration we derive in Richard

If you are serious about your yoga practice, ashtanga yoga shala is the place for you. I have been practicing yoga on and off for many years, and Richard Clark is the best teacher I have ever had. In fact, poor Richard is slowly correcting my postures and bad habits. I dragged my heals to start at this shala, as it’s evening practice and I’m a… morning person. But turns out I love the evening practice and get home to the reward of a deep sleep. Class is much more than the physical practice. There is so much to learn. And Richard has proved to be patient with my progress. As have

Richard is an amazing teacher and person. He has a wealth of knowledge and teaches authentic yoga. At the Ashtanga Yoga Shala it doesn't matter what your body type is or degree of flexibility, because Richard has the knowledge and skill to help everyone tailor their practice to suit their needs and situation. Indeed, one of my biggest learnings has been to gradually let go of these typical Western notions of yoga, and to view asana practice as one of the many limbs of yoga. Highly recommend :)

If you're looking for an authentic yoga practice that goes beyond postures and explores yoga philosophy, pranayama, chanting and meditation then Ashtanga Yoga Shala is for you. Richard offers a disciplined practice, with gentle and knowledgable guidance. I've always been interested in yoga... but this is the first place I've connected with the practice. One of my best experiences in learning authentic yoga through Ashtanga Yoga Shala. I have started noticing the changes within me in a very short period and since I joined. The knowledge I have been seeking and was unable to understand previously, I have suddenly started realising it. It is a very special feeling, a very happy feeling - all the time. Many thanks to Richard for your directions in my journey which has just begun but will surely continue till end.

When I joined Richard's class about a year ago, I was completely new to Ashtanga Yoga and had little knowledge about it. This is not a class to improve your flexibility or strength (those things happen anyway), but to me, these classes are a way of improving my life, not just as means to learn a physical exercise practice. There is always something… to take away from the practice as a learning that can be incorporated in day to day living. Richard's detailed explanations and deep understanding of Yoga make me see the scientific side of spirituality and living a better life with Yoga and

I've been learning Ashtanga vinyasa from Richard Clarke for quite a few years and I am deeply indebted to his depth of commitment. There is a great caring and safety in his traditional, classical method, steeped in ahmisa (non-harming). Anyone who has attended his classes will attest to his unequaled attention to detail, precision and accuracy, in… all aspects of holistic yoga practice and lifestyle. I look forward each class to the 30-45 minute yoga culture talk (satsang) - his expanse of knowledge and understanding never fails to amaze me. The real deal.

I began practising at Ashtanga Yoga Shala in 2003 and I spent the next wonderful nine years practising with Richard and Maxine. Richard is truly knowledgeable about the practise and philosophy of yoga. I feel very grateful that Richard was one of my first teachers on the path of yoga. He taught me so much about what it really is to have and to practise yoga in your life. I no longer live in Brisbane, but I will forever be grateful for those nine years. A truly enriching nine years in my life. For authentic yoga this is this place.

I have been attending Ashtanga Yoga Shala for over a decade and I am still learning so much. Richard is a great teacher and very dedicated to his students. In his classes you learn all facets of yoga - asana, pranayama, mantra, as well the philosophy of yoga. I am also impressed by his knowledge of anatomy and his focus on ensuring everyone performs asanas correctly and avoids injury (unlike some gym class yoga).
Ashtanga yoga is not for the fainthearted, but it is by far the best thing I do for my health every week!

This is the place to learn traditional yoga. Richard is a very compassionate and extremely knowledgeable teacher. Emphasis is not just on physical postures (that are tailored to each persons physical capability), but on the philosophical aspect of yoga as well. All aspects of yoga are touched upon and taught, which makes this school the best place to learn authentic yoga.

For a little more than a year I have been been very fortunate to be a part of a this community of Yoga practitioners, led by Richard Clark. Richard offers a complete and authentic practice that goes beyond… physical exercises to forefront wellbeing. His knowledge of Ayurveda, Sanskrit and Yoga philosophy makes this class a full experience. It is my practice, and I pace and grow it as per my ability, with expert and tailored guidance in a tranquil atmosphere. My favourite is chanting before class and the meditation at the end. Thank you, Richard, for teaching me the meaning of 'being an apprentice

I've been roaming from place to place, practising yoga (or what I thought it was) for 7 years, till I found the Ashtanga Yoga Shala and met Richard. This was a turning point in my practice and life! For the last 2 years I've been learning the through meaning of Yoga and getting more involved and committed with my practice. Thank you Richard and Maxine for your guidance, support and inspiration!
For those looking for a genuine yoga school, I strongly recommend you to try this place. They don't offer free experimental or one-off classes. You have to commit for a minimum of 8-classes, but once you
