Tombo owners Brad and Ashlee met during the 1980's and later combined their skills to establish Tombo in 2006. Tombo means dragonfly in Japanese, hence our logo which was taken from an vintage summer kimono, one that we still own. Brad has been restoring Japanese and Chinese antiques since 1989 and Ashlee has worked solely with vintage Japanese fabrics since 1993.
Our store is in Fitzroy North, where we have a showroom for our finished products, and a warehouse where we undertake restoration of every item we import. We are hands-on in every aspect, spending close to 2 months a year in Japan, hand choosing furniture, fabric, and curios from city to country-side.

Timeless, elegant pieces bring warmth and charm to a home interior. Our Japanese furniture spans Edo, Meiji, Taisho and Showa periods. Each piece has its own unique beauty and rich history. A classic Mizuya for your kitchen, a simple tansu for your clothing, a delicate cha-dana for your tea ceremony, a small chest for your bedside, or calligraphy, document and sewing boxes for your office or studio.
Our Antique pieces from China reflect our love of provincial Chinese design, time-worn pieces evoke a sense of their rich history. Old grain storage chests are converted to functional sideboards & entertainment units, wooden outdoor structures such as gates are recycled into dining tables, benches and stools.
Authentic vintage Japanese fabrics in many different designs & colours. Traditional Japanese Kimono. Feather throw cushions, designed by us and made with our vintage fabrics. From the striking meisen silk designs, the deep indigo provincial cottons, and the soft drape of a kimono, Japanese fabrics have captured many hearts.

Walked into the shop and was immediately assaulted with the wonderful alternative to my normal perception of house furniture and accessories. If I was 34.7 years younger and decking out my unit/apartment/house for the first time I would skip Ikea and make a sure path to Tomboco to purchase what would become my home environment for my lifetime.

These guys know their goods. The most exquisite, unusual, authentic and gorgeous pieces. I've bought fabric, ornaments, paintings and my last thrilled purchase - an antique Japanese easel. I am told they go twice a year to Japan. All are priced generously with the buyer in mind and are one of a kind and you can tell they are lovingly picked. Say hello as well to their little resident doggie Bongo. Brilliantly recommended.
