Founders Dr Bill and Mrs Alexia Martin began Cumberland Education in 1969 with the goal of helping students who were "slipping through the cracks" of the education system. This has continued to drive the work they do to this day. Receive an accurate diagnosis of any difficulties/disorders/disabilities if and where appropriate;.
Originally, Bill was a NSW Department of Education teacher and District School Counsellor. He taught in many Infants, Primary and Secondary schools. In 1969, he was promoted to Special Master at Granville Boys High School. In that same year, he and his wife Alexia Martin, also established Cumberland Education.
When working with clients, we take a truly multi-disciplinary approach. That is, our clinicians (Speech Therapists, Psychologists, Occupational Therapists) and our Literacy Specialists work together to achieve the best outcomes for our clients. The advantage of working in a multi-disciplinary way is that all client needs can be met under the one roof!
The needs and desired outcomes of each particular client drive decisions as to which assessment tools are used. We tailor the types of assessments we provide, to the specific needs of the individual. Before any appointments are made we discuss the specific needs of the client over the phone. We take into account what (if any) assessments have been conducted previously.
Our clinical professionals meet on a regular basis at our team meetings to plan and monitor the programs of treatment and progress of every clinical client. An example of this multi-disciplinary approach could be that the client is receiving speech & language therapy, but is also being monitored by our psychologist who was part of his/her assessment and goal setting.
