Receptive Language refers to our ability to hear, see and comprehend information that another person is trying to relate in written or spoken form. Expressive Language refers to our ability to organise what we want to say and be able to communicate that in an understandable and grammatically correct way.
Adults who use their voice professionally, may find speaking difficult over time or after illness. We treat the voice that is raspy, too soft, too loud, too high, too low, cuts in and out, is often sore or husky. A person with these symptoms may have a voice that is damaged or in danger of being damaged.
Problems in these areas are not uncommon, and can seriously effect learning at school. Often the underlying cause for such problems goes undiagnosed and the wrong treatment can cause further failure and frustration. With degrees in both Speech Pathology and Teaching, we are able to provide correct diagnosis and effective treatment that produces results.
This can be a very debilitating condition that can have devastating effects upon learning, self-confidence, social interactions and can limit job opportunities. Approximately 5 percent of all children go through a period of stuttering that lasts six months or more. Between 50-60% of those will recover spontaneously, leaving about 2-3% of the population with a long-term problem.
This refers to producing the correct speech sounds. As children grow their speech sounds develop so that by the time they reach school age they should be able to produce just about every speech sound that we need in English. If that 'cute' baby way of talking continues or there are some obvious errors compared to other children of the same age, then they should be assessed.
