Located in the backstreets of Fitzroy, Melbourne. The Standard Hotel brings you the best pub food, cold beers & live music that Fitzroy has to offer. Gimmick-free and character-rich, The Standard Hotel has been dedicated to facilitating the fine art of good times since 1865. All and sundry are welcome with open arms - from the upper echelons of Fitzroyalty to wide-eyed out-of-towners.
The famous front bar is forged on a winning combination of quality conversation, drunken poetry and retro kitsch. There's an inescapable warm feeling of nostalgia that comes with securing a cherished seat for one out of the tap under Kevin Murray's Brownlow and "Boony for PM" propaganda. The jewel in The Standard crown is the sprawling, iconic (so says us) beer garden.

A Morricone esque guitar line at the beginning of the opening title track [Canyons] suggests the scope of Pickering's vision and his impressive skill. He is capable of almost single handedly creating captivating music in a variety of styles.
His influences are impeccable: Neil Young comes to mind when his guitar goes into overdrive, Paul McCartney when the melodies get under your skin, Big Star with his DIY pop sensibility and even Rufus Wainwright at times.Back when Buck Owens was a boy in Texas and before Merle Haggard's family moved from Oklahoma you might wonder what went on in Bakersfield, California.

We found this Fitzroy pub many years ago. Unfortunately, so did hundreds of others! During warm days/nights, the large outdoor area gets jam-packed. Food/drinks always reliable and reasonably priced, but the big plus is the atmosphere. Bar staff are very friendly, even courteous - not always the norm for inner city venues. Recommended.

This is a great spot to go for a beer when the weather's decent. The courtyard is lovely, and the indoor area is plenty agreeable in a traditional pub sense. The staff are friendly, and the beer selection is not large but they always have some interesting ones.
The food was OK, I suppose I shouldn't have expected more. Serving sizes are generous so value for money is still decent.
The fish was pretty bland, though at least it was crispy. I did really like the tartare, a lot more finely chopped than I would personally make, and pretty heavy on the dill, but overall a good sauce. The salad is always
