Services
The Wild Yak Tibetan restaurant has been a Melbourne icon for more than 20 years. Australia's first Tibetan restaurant, it moved from the original Smith street location to our current premises in High St Northcote in 2005. What has never changed is the desire to offer our guests a genuine and authentic taste of Tibet.
You cannot underestimate the importance of the Yak to Tibetan life. This unique creature is emeshed in the culture and mythology and lifestyle of Tibetans and has been for thousands of years. A high altitude beast, they will not thrive in lower places. The Yak provides Tibetans with transportation, meat, milk, cheese, butter and yoghurt, wool and skins for clothing and for making felt and tents.
Momos may well be the most famous, and well loved, of all the traditional foods of Tibet. No celebration or special occasion will happen without some of these delicious dumplings. Momos are not for every day, a lot of work and effort is required as each one is hand shaped around its filling. A simple flour and water dough wrapped around a meat filling?
A dish of soy bean thread noodles, once only enjoyed by Royalty and high ranking officials as the noodles were imported at great expense and over long distance from China. Although still traditional it is a slightly new dish gaining popularity with the advent of machine made noodles being easily available.
Chilli and spicy foods are appreciated all over Tibet, what better way to add warmth and flavour? Often the chilli is part of the dish, but more usually the chilli would be added by the diner much in the same way we would add salt and pepper to a western meal. At the Wild Yak we have given a modern take on traditional Tibetan food with our Solo - chilli - dishes, and they are all cooked with chilli.

Incredibly good food and experience. My wife is a private chef, so when it comes to food, we are hard to please. We did not know the Tibetan cuisine and dropped in for a dinner. Staff was very kind and patient to help us, and the dishes were extremely delicious, with strong but well balanced flavours.
Highly recommended.

Worst food I have ever eaten at a restaurant. I'm not one for writing bad reviews but this needs to be addressed. Me and my partner ordered the lunch special, we had a choice of 5 different dishes so we ordered 3 of them so we can try a variety. They came out quite quickly and just by the visual presentation I could tell we weren't in for a good meal. The food was so plain and tasteless. No flavour whatsoever, it was just terrible. The Momo's were just as bad. I've had better frozen meals from Coles. I'm sorry to the owners but easily the worst meal I have ever eaten at restaurant. And I have eaten

Placed a sign outside saying that they offer 10$ lunch special. Walked in and requested it, got told that they don't do it. Why have a sign outside then? Time was 13:30 p.m. Very misleading. Very Disappointed.

Awesome authentic food with generous servings. Lovely atmosphere with the ambience of a Lhasa family kitchen. Exceptional customer service with a warm Tibetan smile. We’ll be back for sure.

We loved it. The food, the service, everything was great. Nothing fancy just very well done. Every dish was new to us but awesome. So much so that when we go back a second time we would struggle to choose something different. I'm sure the whole menu is that good so looking forward to trying more next time. Highly recommended.

Waited over an hour for our food. Working in a family run business myself I’m sympathetic to busy rushes, but they need to get better at managing expectations of wait times.
However after waiting so long I receive what I am certain was not vegetarian soup, even though I explicitly asked about the type of stock used.
If you have specific dietary requirements or allergies, I’d be cautious.

Delicious food! I love their momos (dumplings)! Beef momos are chunky and savory, veggie dumplings and cheese dumplings are creamy and have a perfect balance of potato/cheese and veggies. The homemade chili sauce is just beautiful, spicy but not too hot. Goes well with the meat dumplings. Fair prices for handmade quality food!

We ordered some dumplimgs and mains and it got promptly delivered. however the steamed dumplings were dry and looked like they had been sitring around for a long time. they were not edible. also they did not deliver any sauce with it and upon calling them, they told us that was bad luck. not the sort of customer service nor food quality you would expect. very disappointed!
