Proactive Self Defence has its roots back in 1979 with founder Kyoshi Shihan Rick O'Brien commencing Kenpo Karate in Hurstbridge dojo. In 1984 Rick as a 17 year old brown belt was asked to continue Mernda dojo as the instructor had to move.
From here Rick's coaching skills developed along with his skills as he furthered his Muay Thai & Filipino martial arts under Mick Nicholls freestyle combat as well as studying overseas in Thailand, USA & Papua New Guinea.His classes were so popular he opened Dojangs in Whittlesea in 1988, Wallan in 1989, Mill Park in 1991, Lalor & Epping in 1992 Greensborough & Eltham in 1993.

Catering for beginners, intermediate, & advanced - our wide variety of classes are taught by expert instructors who will help you develop new skills, enhance your technique, and achieve your goals.
Fun, friendly classes specially designed for preschool and early primary age children. Little Dragons develop kids' coordination, social skills, self confidence, self discipline, and promotes healthy fitness habits. Little Dragons classes are fun and friendly, geared toward preschool and early primary age children.
Junior Martial Arts develop kids' coordination, social skills, confidence, self discipline, and promotes healthy fitness habits that will last a lifetime. Australian Freestyle Martial Arts (AFMA) offers an excellent Junior program developed by Principal Rick O'Brien with over 40 years of experience in teaching children.
Proactive gives teens the opportunity to train in our combined Teen/ Adult Martial Arts program. Classes cater for all levels of experience - from absolute beginners trying out Martial Arts for the first time, intermediates, through to advanced Black Belt. Australian Freestyle Martial Arts (AFMA) offers a combined Teen/ Adult Martial Arts program.
The Martial Masters introductory program offers mature adults a balanced approach to personal security, self defence, health, and well being. Classes are friendly, fun and designed to cater for men and women aged over 50. Self Defence skills, Unarmed combat based on simple, instinctive defensive and offensive skills in a very safe, yet effective manner.

Proactive Self Defense is a great club, always welcoming and very family friendly. We all love going and the online classes that are being offered at the moment are very engaging and organized. An amazing place, Shihan Rick O’Brien has years of experience and we have been there for many years. Well maintained purposed built facilities with a varied selection of classes. If you have been bullied at work or school and want self defense classes this place is for you especially if there is anything going on in your life the place is like a family and everyone watches out for each other and all help one another its such a honour to know everyone at PROACTIVE instructors are absolutely awesome and will always answer any questions you may have love this place
