Services
Each of our ten rooms has its own ensuite (eight with large corner baths) as well as split system air conditioning, complimentary wifi, tea & coffee making facilities and access to our large guest lounge and complimentary daily PRESSHUB newspapers. Room rates include a delicious a la carte breakfast chosen from our specially prepared guest menu as well as a leisurely 12pm checkout.
Our Small Standard Rooms are our most petite option - for more space please explore our other room options, we recommend The Large Standard, King Room or Apartment. Please email the guesthouse for specific room requests or if you have requirements for a room. Athelstane House is a contactless venue, you will receive an information pack 2 days before your arrival via email and text message.
Not just the gateway to the Great Ocean Road, Queenscliff is a wonderful destination in its own right with an abundance of new and old things to see and do. Here is our guide to enjoying your stay on the beautiful Bellarine Peninsula. Australia's most unique music experience - a mini blues festival in one unforgettable night!
There are some stunning and truly invigorating walks around Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale taking in parts of the area we suspect most visitors never see. Use the map/guide in your compendium as your guide and feel free to ask us for directions! Explore the Coastal Moonah Woodland extending from the Point Lonsdale Village past the Rip View Car Park and around the iconic Point Lonsdale Lighthouse.
Queenscliff is literally surrounded by beautiful bay beaches with crystal-clear water and gentle swells - ideal for all swimmers. The beautiful and largely undiscovered 'back' beach runs from the top (southern) end of Hesse Street all the way around to Point Lonsdale (approximately 5km). A 'boardwalk' services about half of this distance.

I was in two minds about writing this review. Part of me wants to keep this hidden treasure precisely that way, whilst the other, more generous me is inclined to share with the world just how fabulous it is to experience a stay at Athelstane House. We booked the last remaining room a few days before our spur-of-the-moment trip, and were fortunate to get a booking at such a busy time of year. Room no 10 is the only bedroom on the ground floor (aside from the Apartment) and runs directly off the charming and verdant courtyard which is covered by a productive grape vine. The room was quirky and quaint

A beautiful historic building with lots of atmosphere and charm, our visit here has been lovely. The breakfast included has a wide range of made to order cooked dishes, after 2 mornings we have each chosen… different things and all have been delicious, fresh and tasty, served by the lovely Laurel, happy, friendly, just delightful.

We have had several of our clients stay at Athelstane House in the past couple of years and have seen first hand the level of hospitality and customer service that Laurel delivers! Our manager was also lucky enough to be taken for a tour of the facility and was thoroughly impressed by the standard of accommodation on offer.

Love staying at this guest house. It's clean, comfortable and still a little old world. Their breakfst menu has something for everyone and Laurel is the most accommodating host.
I've used this accommodation for work and look forward to staying for a getaway weekend.

We had the most lovely time staying at Athelstane House. Everything was perfect! Quiet comfortable and full of old fashioned charm. Be prepared to climb some stairs if you get the upstairs rooms. It's worth it to get the front room with a bath and balcony - it's the best! Mattress is not quite 5 stars but i can forgive that because everything else was. Lovely and close to everything in Queenscliff.

Simple and elegant historic hotel with a beautiful vibe. A highlight is the 2 pairs of French doors to the verandah and Andirondack chaises tables and chairs...so perfect. Looking forward to the famous breakfast. We've been here twice before, but many years ago. So far it is as good as we remembered.

I had booked a 2 night stay at this accommodation. the site I booked on said free cancellation. Well when things were going to he'll with Covid I in that area i had to cancel as i become ill on the Friday and advised them. at no time did they notify me i would be charged the full price for the 2 nights. i have just received my bank statement and… have found they have charged me the $535.24. Personally I am aware that businesses are doing hard but I'm a nurse and was taking a well deserved week break and sadly very sadly by being responsible I have been charged by I feel unscrupulous businesses

One of the most charming accommodation venues I have stayed at in a very long time. Brilliant location, one block from the beach and around the corner from all the shops. Friendly stars and immaculate surrounds.Extremely delicious and well prepared breakfast included! Will definitely stay again and consider a group booking in the future!

Laurel; we can't thank you enough for hosting our wedding this weekend just gone (2nd Nov). I don't have the words to express our gratitude (properly) for being SO amazing!! Our family, friends and guests loved… the rooms & service, and I hope you get more custom from some of them. A huge thank you to Bec and all the other wonderful staff that worked that weekend to help make our day, and our Reception, so special. Once we get some more of our (professional) pics back, I'll definitely send you a heap! 💜💙🥰😘

We spent 3 nights at Athelstane House & cannot recommend it highly enough. Our host Laurel was so warm & welcoming & nothing was too much trouble. We Had the King suite & it was just like the photos. Very… spacious & very comfortable, loved the selection of magazines , it was just a shame the weather wasn’t better so that we could make more use of our balcony. Plenty of chill out zones inside & out if you are there with a group. Our breakfast each day was beautifully cooked & very tasty. If you want an escape to the seaside this ticks all the boxes. Can

I have been visiting Athelstane for several years, it was always a great little gem when Queenscliff let the tourist crowds overwhelm its many normally charming venues... but lately Athelstane had lost its mojo.

So my recent visit, in which I ended up having coffee with the NEW owners, revealed that the former owners had been winding down towards selling the place - bingo, that's why!

I am glad to report that Athelstane is now back baby ! The staff seem re-energised, the coffee is great, the food amazing and that charming atmosphere remains.
