Pilates exercises develop a strong "core, " or center of the body. The core consists of the deep abdominal muscles along with the muscles closest to the spine. Control of the core is achieved by integrating the trunk, pelvis and shoulder girdle. Gain long, strong muscles and flexibility Conventional workouts tend to build short, bulky muscles - the type most prone to injury.

Pilates elongates and strengthens, improving muscle elasticity and joint mobility. A body with balanced strength and flexibility is less likely to be injured. In conventional workouts, weak muscles tend to get weaker and strong muscles tend to get stronger. The result is muscular imbalance - a primary cause of injury and chronic back pain.

Pilates Body Shop was founded in 2001 by Robyn Alvarez, a highly qualified instructor with over 20 years experience in the Pilates Industry. Robyn was a Fitness Leader at the Univerity of NSW Gym prior when she attended her first Pilates matwork class and fell in love with the method.

Prior to starting Pilates, Karen worked as a TAFE and community college vocational teacher for many years after having completed a Diploma of Teaching (Technical) at Sydney Teachers College.Following this Karen completed a Diploma of Drama (Ensemble Acting Studios) and became a registered Fitness Leader.
Joseph Pilates was born in Germany in 1880. As a child he suffered from asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever, and it was these childhood illnesses that drove him to discover a method of overcoming them. He focused on sport as a way to build physical strength, and became a skilled gymnast, skier, boxer and wrestler.

Pilates mat work is a series of exercises that are done on the floor without Pilates machines. The attention to the flow of movement and to the core muscles is the same as when you do Pilates on the Equipment. Matwork uses a mat and your own body weight for resistance. The Pilates method of exercise is a non-impact body conditioning program suitable for all ages and fitness levels.
