It all started in the declining days of the Borovansky Ballet. A group of enthusiastic and talented dancers, choreographers, designers and musicians gathered at the home of Margaret Scott to talk about the need for a national dance company supported by a strong and independent school.
In 1962, Margaret Scott was commissioned by The Elizabethan Theatre Trust to prepare a report on the possible founding of a national school to complement the newly established Australian Ballet. The School came into being through the advocacy of Dame Margaret Scott.

Services
The Australian Ballet School exists to provide young classical ballet dancers with exceptional training and education to prepare them for a professional career with leading dance companies in Australia and worldwide. The School nurtures a passion for dance participation in Australia. As the national centre for vocational classical dance, The Australian Ballet School plays a central role in the history and future of dance.
I joined The Australian Ballet School in 1978 and after graduation went on to dance as a Principal Artist with The Australian Ballet and as Senior Principal with the English National Ballet. Now, after many years committed to vocational education and training, I am thrilled to lead the School into the future, following in the footsteps of the three visionary leaders who came before me.
Over the past 55 years The Australian Ballet School has been training dancers from around the country to be ready for a professional career. It is renowned as one of the great vocational schools of the world. As a graduate I know how important these formative years are for a dancer and I am proud that so many of our dancers have been trained under the expert tuition that The Australian Ballet School provides.
The Australian Ballet School offers a variety of training options for local and international students. For Level 4-8 students, our Full-Time Programme aims to produce elite classical dancers of the highest international standard. For Level 1-3 students, our After School Programme provides a strong foundation of classical dance education.
Entry into The Australian Ballet School's renowned Training Programme requires audition. We are committed to diversity in dance and welcome auditions from First Nations, LGBTQI+ dancers and those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. All dancers are given equal consideration. You can audition in person or audition online, scroll down for the details.

Really enjoyed last night's production of The Australian Ballet School's 'Showcase 2019'. Congratulations to all students and staff. Some nice tricks and demonstration of technique and training across classical and modern fields. AND the inclusion of 'Who Cares' was such a bonus. We saw NYC do it many years ago. Last nights version was not a disappointment. Some lovely interpretations and very nice Balanchine style. Who else saw it - I picked 3 girls and 5 boys to go into the AB. Very impressed !! The Australian Ballet School holds so many wonderful memories for me. We all mourn the loss of our beloved Maggie. Her legacy goes on in all the young dancers that pass through the doors of this incredible establishment.
To quote Graeme Murphy, "Her DNA is in all that have come from the school, either as her students or as students of her students. There wouldn't have been a Ballet Company somewhere in the world, that hasn't had an ABS student amongst its dancers."

Bravo to all the dancers in Saturday night's performance of Coppelia. We were in awe of you technique, strength and presence. Special mention to Emma Koppelman, we fell in love with her. She lit up the stage… and we held our breath as she pirouetted on her points. My daughter's first time to the ballet and mine for many many years... we can't wait to see what you do next year!! Thank you.

Their performances by the senior students are just exquisite. If you love the ballet but cannot afford to go to the full company's performances then you should go to the student's shows. They are held in an afternoon which makes it ideal to meet your friend, have lunch then go to the show. Would highly recommend!
