Established in 1857, during the heady days of the Victorian gold rush, The Oxford Scholar Hotel has for more than 160 years served Melburnians at the northern-end of Swanston Street. In 2019 'The Scholar' has been redeveloped, refurbished and re-imagined as a sophisticated bar and eatery, situated in the heart of the recently transformed RMIT City campus.

With the creation of a series of new bar, dining and event spaces, The Scholar offers a relaxed, comfortable and sophisticated experience for its patrons. We feature a wide selection of both local and international craft beer, while our menu selections are built upon locally sourced and fresh produce, offering innovative, seasonally appropriate and exceptional dishes.
Services
The Oxford Scholar Hotel has a range of versatile event spaces and facilities to cater for many different types of functions and special events. Everything from corporate and academic events, cocktail and birthday parties, product launches, networking and/or university alumni functions, long lunches, group wine dinners, special anniversaries and more are all able to be staged.

The pub has improved a lot in just the past few years. The selection of food and drinks is interesting and fairly priced. They finally worked out that they should be the official pub for the University campus next door, and I appreciate the discount that I get as an alumnus. Next time I'm in Melbourne I will make the effort to come back.

I came in on a Monday night and not only was the food fantastic but the staff were so friendly and helpful when it came to helping me pick from their great selection of beers on tap! It was just the sort of post lockdown pub experience I was looking for! Can't wait to come back here!!

I think everyone who goes to RMIT hangs around at this place. I always have beers here but I loved the espresso martini when I tried it for the first time. I hope they have more karaoke nights in the future.

Would have been a five, bar staff terrific, great beers and good atmosphere. Food for three of us no worries, my nachos and pulled pork (paid for) had no pulled pork. Wait staff said would be fixed, nothing, when reminded said she had taken it up with manager. Nothing heard, couldn’t be bothered with hassle but a disappointing feature of the evening.

I come here regularly with one of my Uni mates. This is our go to pub; really like the food and a great choice of beers on tap. There is one Asian girl that works there who is always so friendly, helpful and smiling making a very good atmosphere. Always look forward to visiting this place, highly recommend.

This a really good pub. Funky atmosphere, great decor (kudos to the designer), great selection of beers and the food is above competent. You definitely feel like you get your money's worth. The lady who brought over the meal was bubbly, friendly and helpful. The one star off is cause the guy who initially served me at the bar treated me as if I was a uni student, but, when I presented as friendly and said I wasn't a uni student he changed his tune. Semantics perhaps, but, overall a positive experience.

This is just a short and quick preliminary review. Since the renovations, they've ruined the vibe and attraction of what used to be a decent period pub. With its 'modernistic' design and style, they have lost the charm that was synonymous to The Oxford Scholar. Now it's just another hipster drinking place. Food from the menu is good in taste, reasonably portioned and comparably priced. However, don't break your bank on the dessert options. Most of the options are just for looks. Portion and tastes of these desserts are sub-optimal.

Great service, kid friendly pub with good meals at reasonable prices.
This is the second time that we came to the pub.
The first time I totally forgot to take photos but we had a classic cheese burger and it was really good. It was a little on the smaller size. The chips are done in the same style as Schnitz so they were very delicious. For dessert, we had the sticky date pudding. The presentation was great but for me, sticky date needs ice cream or cream to offset the sweetness. It was still good though.
This time around we had the steak and the oven baked fish. There was an earlier review

The ambience - great!
The beers on tap - passably good!
The food - tasty BUT here's the ringer -
An entree sized portion of crispy(not) calamari will set you back 16 dollars. What you expect on a cold rainy Saturday evening is a reasonable portion of hot crispy calamari.
What you get is six pieces of blandly seasoned rubbery calamari rings accompanied by a saving grace of tasty dip and beautifully pickled cucumber and cauliflower. Melbourne's cbd has a number of examples of great food that does not pretend.
Definitely recommend for the ambience and vibe but I'd say stick to the chips and burgers
